  • Fine grain and accurate colors
  • Perfect for mixed light sources
  • Unique particularly and rare emulsion
  • Films that were shot on this material: Slumdog Millionaire, War of the Worlds, The Fighter, Green Zone

Reala 500D is a rare and truly special film due to its fourth color layer. While all cine films have three color layers (including Kodak Vision3), Fuji added an additional cyan layer to the emulsion, which among other things, resulted in much better color reproduction under artificial light, especially fluorescent tubes. The film offers accurate color reproduction and has a rich color palette, which is perfect for portraits, as well as indoor and outdoor applications.

The film is similar to Fujifilm Superia Reala , which has not been produced since 2012. The film was aimed at the professional market and was known for particularly sharp and fine-grained photos and vibrant colors. The film also worked well with mixed artificial light sources, e.g. flash and fluorescent tubes.

Fuji introduced the film in 2001 and ended production in 2011. According to film archive shotonwhat, only 24 titles were shot on Reala 500D, while popular emulsions at the time, such as Kodak Vision2 500T produced ten times as many movies. This makes Reala 500D one of the rarest emulsions for film productions. Thus the few remaining rolls are very popular.

Since this is Fujifilm, it is highly recommended to develop the film in ECN-2, where the colors are pronounced and realistic, while the film gets an experimental look in C-41. In low sun or very warm light, an 80A filter is recommended, otherwise the film tends to have a red cast. This can be corrected to a limited extent in post-processing.

Motion picture film: This film has a remjet layer, so it can’t be dropped of at a normal lab, because that would damage their processing machine! There are numerous specialized labs that develop this film, a List can be found here. Alternatively, developing at home is not complicated, a guide can be found here. Age: This film dates from approx. 2006 and therefore has a lower ISO than the manufacturer’s specification, as film loses sensitivity (ISO) with age. We therefore determine the True ISO (see below in the properties), with which the film is correctly exposed.
