Kodak releases new motion picture film Verita 200D. An emulsion for a classic cinematic look.

With the release of the third season of Euphoria, Kodak introduces Verita 200D. The film is a complement to the Vision3 line and renders colors and skin tones in a way that is more reminiscent of older film stocks.

The image is described as classically cinematic. Verita 200D offers detailed highlights, high color saturation, deep blacks, and warm, natural skin tones. Compared to Kodak’s Vision3 films, the dynamic range is somewhat smaller.

This is intended to offer an alternative to the flawless look of Kodak Vision3. Vanessa Bendetti, Kodak’s VP and Head of Motion Picture Film, reports in an interview with IndieWire:

“As Kodak has refined its image quality over the years, filmmakers are actually looking to disrupt that at this point because they’re trying to differentiate from digital.”

The trend toward imperfection to distinguish from the clinical digital image has been emerging for a long time. Cinematographers are turning to old, minimally corrected lenses for this purpose. In color grading, the “film look” has long been popular.

Hollywood often goes straight to the original, shooting on film and therefore wanting emulsions with lots of character. The desire from Hollywood to bring back the old product lines EXR or Vision did not fall on deaf ears at Kodak, but encountered difficulties in production. Many materials from the old formulas are simply no longer available.

Kodak’s film design team worked with Euphoria cinematographer Marvell Rév to test and optimize the new emulsion. The film has no remjet layer and instead features Kodak’s AHU. ECN-2 development is recommended, but cross-processing in C-41 is easily possible.

Bendetti expresses hope in the interview with IndieWire that the development of Verita is only the first step in expanding the product range.

Will Verita 200D 36 exp. soon be available for photographers on our website?
